Zane and the Vacuum

Our dog Zane thinks the vacuum is his best friend.

We know this is true by the way he runs around trying to play with it whenever we turn it on. Also, one day when we left it out, we saw him trying to share a toy with it. Vacuums are ill-equipped to play tug-o-war unless they are plugged in.

While he loves his curious friend, the vacuum, he is also simultaneously afraid of it. This is probably my (Suzy's) fault.

One day while I was using the attachment to clean the living room couch, Zane cautiously approached the momentarily stationary base. I gleefully took the opportunity to turn the hose on Zane and try to get some of those loose hairs off before they found their way to every piece of clothing that I own. This he did not appreciate and promptly ran out of reach.

I must also admit that I enjoy chasing Zane around a bit when I'm running it over the carpets. Is it considered torture if he keeps coming back for more?

It so happened that one day Zane found himself trapped in a corner. I was vacuuming the rug in the dining room when he realized that too many chair legs blocked an escape under the kitchen table, walls on two other sides left the only other opening blocked by his friend/foe. Seeing that he was suddenly under a lot of stress, and not wanting to totally mess him up for life, I made a decision. I turned to the vacuum and commanded it to "sit" as I quickly switched it off. (Zane sat as well) When even the fearsome vacuum obeys my commands, that should demonstrate that I'm an alpha dog here. :)
