Mine didn't, but it tasted fine. Plus, my cherry pie filling was homemade with fresh cherries (thanks again, bountiful baskets) so take that, perfect picture! Anyway, so we shared that dessert and then played canasta. My Mother-in-law were on a team and we assured Brycen and his Dad that we would cream them, just like last time. A couple bad hands later, however, and despite our positive thinking, the guys took the game. Happy Father's day.
So that was our day with our awesome Dads.
But I also had a little surprise in store for Brycen (this is not an announcement). Sunday morning I made him German pancakes (I wonder, do German's really call this their pancake? And do people in other countries call our 'normal' pancakes "American Pancakes" or spice it up with a cool word like "Flapjacks"?), then imagine his face when I carry this out to him:
Okay, it was really a watch- I just wanted to keep him in the dark for as long as possible.
Story!
It was the Wednesday or Thursday before Father's day when Brycen gets an email from Out'N'Back, a camping/climbing/mountaineering store. "Dirt cheap deals!" it claimed, and featured a watch.
"Check this out," Brycen says, motioning me to the couch.
"A watch. Cool." I say.
Apparently I wasn't impressed enough because he reads off a list of gadgets and tools and features it's capable of. "I used to always wear a watch- ever since I was like 12," he continued, "but after my mission my last one broke and I've just never gotten around to getting a new one."
My head is saying ding! ding! ding! Father's day present! But my mouth needs to convince him to not buy it before I can. "Honey, we just can't afford it right now..."
And so it went. Every so often Brycen would bring it up and I would shoot it down with progressively lamer excuses. It got really difficult when Friday I mentioned wanting to go to Kohl's for some new clothes for an upcoming job interview.
"Oh, I see how it is," Brycen jested, "you get to go buy new clothes, but I can't get one little watch."
Err....
Somehow I weaseled my way out of that one.
Saturday morning, as I was running around, I made a stop by the store and purchased one. As I picked Brycen up from work that evening, he persisted in convincing me that this was a really good deal. The sale would be ending that night.
I started to panic a little when he was looking at what time the store closed. 8 o'clock, and right now it was only 7:23. There was still time...
"WAIT!" thinking quickly, I said, "I'll call and see if they even have anymore left."
He scooted the computer over to me so I could see the number. Deftly, I dialed Time & Temp.
Good Evening. Central Bank time is...
"Hello! I was just calling about the watch featured on the dirt cheap email from this week. Do you have any left?"
...Current temperature: 76 degrees...
"Oh, really? Oh, okay. Thank you."
...Saturday, high of...
Click.
"Were they all out?" Brycen guessed by my tone of voice.
"Yeah."
"Told you it was a good deal."
Muahahahahaha!!!
Pulling the box from the striped pink bag, he still couldn't guess what it was until lifting the lid from the box.
"Hey, is this...?"
"You betcha!" I laughed. Oh, I LOVE surprises! Happy Father's day Brycen! (not an announcement)
I loved this little story! I love how you kept saying not an announcement!
